Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
With a sufficient timezone overlap with the team, we're able to hire eligible candidates for this role from any location in Australia and New Zealand.
Atlassian is looking for an exceptional Principal Engineer to join our Search Platform team in the Central AI department. You will report to a Senior Engineering Manager. This team is tasked with providing the essential building blocks to enhance the search and conversational experiences for Atlassian products. The Central AI organisation constructs the fundamental infrastructure, data pipelines, frameworks and other capabilities to expedite AI feature development throughout the entire company.
Your future team
The Central AI department is part of the larger Atlassian Intelligence program. Its purpose is to accelerate AI innovation across all our products and platform, provide cohesive AI experiences and setup up an Atlassian AI infrastructure for the future.
While it's anticipated that the majority of AI-driven initiatives will be developed and executed by federated product teams within Atlassian, the role of Central AI is pivotal to this success. Central AI is tasked with constructing the underlying infrastructure and capacities, which are crucial for the seamless integration and optimal functionality of AI across various departments. By doing so, Central AI ensures that different teams within the organisation do not work in silos but have access to a unified foundation that promotes efficiency and collaboration. Additionally, Central AI is responsible for developing the core shared experiences typical in the AI domain, such as search, knowledge discovery and conversation.

What you'll do:

  • Pioneer the development of search capabilities and relevance to meet the needs of the AI wave.
  • Drive large, complex projects autonomously, from technical design to launch.
  • Contribute to ongoing feature development, specialising in search functionality and be the domain expert on search and relevance related technologies.
  • Solve architecture challenges, apply architectural standards and start using them on new projects.
  • Lead code reviews & documentation as well as take on complex bug fixes, especially on high-risk problems.
  • Partner across engineering teams to tackle company-wide initiatives.

Your background:

  • 6+ years of software development experience.
  • Strong expertise in Java or equivalent language technology and the ability to write performant production-quality code.
  • Deep hands-on experience in improving search relevance or recommendation systems at scale.
  • Experience with the machine learning (ML) infrastructure domain including data pipelines, feature logging and model serving to support relevance models within a search or recommendation context.
  • Passion for collaborating with and mentoring junior members of the team.
  • Focus on business practicality and the 80/20 rule; very high bar for output quality, but recognise the business benefit of "having something now" vs "perfection sometime in the future".
