Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have a choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

This critical role ensures that we continuously build, optimise and evolve our data platform and tooling capabilities to enable the data platform users to efficiently and effectively self-serve and implement scalable data solutions to deliver significant value to the business and the best design experience to our customers.

As a key member of the group, this role drives technical alignment with Canva’s strategic objectives, collaborates with various business domains and data platform stakeholders & users to define the data platform’s technical vision, lead the build of the data platform and its engineering capabilities and uplift analytics engineering practices.

This role requires both strategic thinking and a ‘can do’ attitude - strategic thinking to drive the data platform’s engineering mindset transformation, and a ‘can-do’ attitude to hands-on build and deliver technical solutions, support and see through complex/critical initiatives and own the outcome.

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

  • Uplifting Analytics Engineering Specialty’s practices, especially in engineering, architecture and documentation.
  • Collaborating and engaging across all Super Groups and Specialties supporting their data needs, and aligning on technical priorities and roadmap.
  • Proactively identifying opportunities, and shaping and leading analytics engineering initiatives to achieve material business value.
  • Collaborating and supporting Product Managers, Technical Program Managers and other key stakeholders to ensure priority, delivery and practice alignment.

You're probably a match if

  • You have strong experience in data platform engineering/data warehouses and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • You have proven experience in building technical strategies and roadmaps for data platform architecture and tooling across a large modern business.
  • You have relevant experience in software engineering & operation with hands-on experience in SQL and a solid understanding of CI/CD.
  • You are experienced in building/implementing data governance and data management.
  • You have demonstrated experience in supporting a data platform (e.g. production support, incidents response, platform monitoring, reliability uplift).
  • You have hands-on experience with data platform tooling, preferably with: AWS, Snowflake, DBT, Fivetran, Terraform, Containers, BuildKite, SQL, Python/R, Atlan, Mode, Looker.
  • You have experience in mentoring teams, preferably in the analytics engineering domain.
  • You have experience in leading delivery/project management, with a strong understanding of the agile mindset and its ways of working.
  • You have strong business acumen with experience in navigating complex environments.
  • You show strategic & long-term thinking with pragmatic excellence in execution.
