Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • You will lead a small (3 to 5) team of engineers focused on building and extending the various systems that assemble and deliver web page bootstraps
  • You will be accountable for team delivery and ongoing delivery improvements
  • You will partner with Product to shape the roadmap, balancing product outcomes with pragmatic technical excellence.
  • You will be a hands-on leader contributing directly to progressing goals with code
  • You will partner with a broad set of stakeholders to ensure the platform you are building is fit for the needs of Canva as it continues to grow and evolve.
  • Help set technical direction by researching, justifying and advocating you and your teams design choices in the form of design docs

You're probably a match if

  • You have experience in a technical leadership role; and in a people management or team leadership position.
  • You’ve got experience building and monitoring systems in distributed cloud environments (ideally AWS).
  • A systems thinker. Who is equally at home scaling a Java back end service as looking at Javascript payload sizes in the browser.
  • You have deep knowledge and understanding of Computer Engineering fundamentals and first principles and how they apply to the modern web.
  • Hands on experience in both the front end (Javascript) and backend (ideally Java) domains.
  • Any experience with templating languages will be well regarded.
  • You have the ability to guide and mentor other members within the team and improve the way we collaborate, learn, and share ideas.
  • You have excellent communication and collaboration skills to coordinate efforts across teams in a dynamic environment.

About the Team

The Page Assembly team will be responsible for developing, maintaining and evolving the systems for building and distributing web pages to millions of users. About the Role

This role sits within the newly formed Page Assembly team. As the Engineering Manager of the Page Assembly team, you will provide a balance of people, technical and delivery leadership. You will ensure that the team has a high-impact technical roadmap and delivers on its goals efficiently while fostering a safe and inclusive environment for people to experiment, learn and grow. Your work will be vital in keeping the Canva product highly available, secure and performant.
